FAQ
Does Medicare pay for aging-in-place home modifications?
Original Medicare generally does not cover home remodeling or permanent accessibility modifications, such as curbless showers, grab bars, ramps, widened doorways or first-floor bathrooms.
Some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may offer supplemental benefits for home safety or accessibility modifications, including certain structural changes for eligible members with chronic conditions. Coverage depends on the specific plan, the proposed work and individual eligibility.
Before planning around Medicare Advantage benefits, contact your plan to confirm what modifications are covered, any benefit limits, required approvals and whether specific providers must perform the work.
Other assistance programs may be available to help eligible homeowners pay for modifications, separately from Medicare.
