FAQ
Can I put a wheelchair ramp or lift on the sidewalk in front of my Philadelphia rowhouse?
Do not assume the public sidewalk is available for an access installation. Philadelphia Streets reviews proposed right-of-way encroachments, and L&I determines the applicable permit and prerequisite approvals. Sidewalk wheelchair elevators specifically require Streets and Art Commission approval before an L&I permit can be issued. A ramp or a different lift proposal needs its own review; do not assume every installation follows the same approval path. Boundaries, grade, landing space, pedestrian passage and equipment requirements matter. A rear yard, driveway or garage may offer an alternative, subject to its own design and approvals. NK confirms the current requirements for the actual proposal during planning.
