FAQ

Is my home safe if it already has star bolts?

The presence of star bolts does not by itself mean that a wall is unsafe, but it also does not confirm that the structure is currently in good condition. Star bolts are installed to stabilize masonry walls, and an existing installation may continue to perform properly when the wall, rods, plates, connections, and surrounding masonry remain in good condition.

Existing star bolts should be evaluated if there are signs of continued movement or deterioration. These can include new or widening cracks near the plates, rust staining, loose or displaced hardware, gaps between the plate and masonry, changes in the wall profile, or continued outward bowing.

NK Construction & Design can inspect the existing wall and star bolt system to determine whether the installation appears to be performing as intended or whether repair, reinforcement, replacement, or another structural solution should be considered. This is especially useful when purchasing a Philadelphia rowhome with an existing star bolt installation or when changes in the wall have been noticed over time.
